Edwin Ferry Johnson

Surveyor of the Champlain Canal and chief engineer of the New York & Erie, Hartford & New Haven and Northern Pacific railroads. Early proponent of a transcontinental railroad and later mayor of Middletown, CT.

Bismarck, North Dakota was originally named "Edwinton" after Edwin Ferry Johnson, a chief engineer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, the city was renamed one year later after German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck.
