Kalamazoo Banker Born in Marshall in 1843 (By United Press)

Kalamazoo, Nov. 20--Death today claimed Edwin J. Phelps, 82, one of the best known bankers in Michigan. He died here following an illness which had kept him in bed for about two weeks, after having suffered ill health during the past three years. ---Phelps spent almost 70 years of his life in the banking field. He organized and was president for 39 years of the Kalamazoo National bank, from which position he resigned in August 1923, to become chairman of the board of directors. ---He was the son of Horace Phelps, pioneer Kalamazoo business man and windmill manufacturer. Born in Marshall in 1843 he started work in the "Taylor and Wood" bank at the age of 12. After advancing to the position of cashier he organized the banking firm of E.J. Phelps and Co., which was later expanded.
