About Edzard Adolph Grimbeek, SV/PROG

Edsard Adolph Grimbeck of Varberg, Sweden, was Opper-Meester on the "Mearmin" when he was appointed surgeon of the Company's Slave Lodge at the Cape in 1786. (Cape Archives (80, pl385). THIS WAS THE BEGINNINGOF THE GRIMBEEK FAMILY IN SOUTH AFRICA.

When this post was abolished in 1792 he became a burgher surgeon in Cape Town, claiming by 1803 a "large practice in this place" and performing post-mortem examinations for the Court of Justice (Cape Archives BR82 p93). Memorial to Janssens (updated). In 1803 he protested as an established practitioner, against his omission from the Batavian "Vaccination Commissie". General Janssen referred the letter to the Genees Kundige Commissie and the Commitee' replied that not all Cape Practitioners had been included anyway. An interesting development arising from the protest was the Commissie's decision to allow other Cape practitioners to vaccinate properly. They were then granted an Acten van Admissie. Permission to vaccinate was withheld from "such as possess no Diploma or Testimonial from any qualified person or College. (Cape Archivesb073 p308). This was the first attempt to sort the grain from the chaff in the Cape Medical Profession. (From the History of Medicine in South Africa - by Edmund Burrows).

Edsard Adolf met and married a Dutch girl, and therefore changed his surname to a more acceptable one to his in-laws. Since this change occurred, the surname is spelt in three different ways, i.e. Grimbeck, Grimbeek and Grimbeeck, although all of these are directly related.
