

"He took the mathematical course at Oberlin college; was one of the strong factors in the building of Tabor college at Tabor, la., on lines similar to those of Oberlin. His convictions were strong against slavery and the use of liquor. In 1861, he was appointed by Gov. Samuel J. Kirkwood, second lieutenant of the Citizen's Union Guards, in the Fremont County regiment of militia. He was justice of the peace for many years and was usually known by the title of "Squire" Avery."
