About Elbert Mathis
He was a Confederate sharpshooter. He was captured at Chickamauga and escaped. He was recaptured and taken to Rock Island IL and imprisoned. He was released in a prisoner exchange in 1864, and returned to the Confederate states, where he was assigned to its secret service.
