About Eldora F. "Dode" Wright

She was the Dora Howery, a school teacher in Cottonwood Township, Phelps County, Nebraska, about whom an inspector wrote, "Mar. 15, 1910 - The schoolhouse in this district is poor. Furniture is also in poor condition. Textbooks are new. Miss Dora Howery, the teacher is a conscientious worker, however does not seem to have the respect and confidence of her pupils which is necessary to get results in the school room. Enrollment 13, present 9."

She married Sam Wright about 1914. They moved to Chico, California during the 1920s.

She and Sam Wright were members of the Church of the Brethren. Emily Wright, their granddaughter, has a family tradition that Eldora wore long skirts, and a sheer cap with side strings. This tradition confirms that the church was the Brethren, and not a similarly named church. Her nephew's wife, Evelyn (Horn) Howery, thought the Howerys were Amish because of their strict observance.
