Eleanor Knowles

The Bahamas DNA Project has verified records showing that Eleanor (Elinor) Newman Knowles was born in 1788 to Arthur Newman (originally of Nassau, later Long Island) and his unknown wife -- previously believed to be either Roxanna Remington or Elizabeth McKenzie, both of whom have been ruled out through DNA.

Around 1813, Eleanor married Joseph Alexander Knowles, son of James Knowles and Hannah Campbell. Together, they had three children:

• James Alexander Knowles, b. November 10, 1812 at the Crossing, Long Island
• Joseph Robert Knowles (known as Joseph Jr.), b. March 13, 1814 on Long Island
• Elizabeth (or Isabella) Jane Knowles Darville, b. February 19, 1818 on Long Island

Eleaonr died on June 28, 1878 or 1879 on Long Island. She was predeceased by her husband, who is believed to have died sometime between 1825 and 1850.
