About Eleanor "Nellie" Mitchell

Eleanor Thomasson was a daughter of John Thomasson and his wife, Eleanor Diamond, Irish immigrants living in Elbert Co., Ga. She married William Mitchell (1777-1859) and they had eleven children. They moved to Henry (now Rockdale) Co., Georgia around 1835.

The children of Eleanor Thomasson and William Mitchell were: Frances Mitchell (1801-1837, m. Anderson White), William B. Mitchell (1803-1809), Nancy Ann Mitchell (1805-1876, m. Bannister Bray), John Thomas Mitchell (1807-c.1890, m. Rena Moon), Hiram B. Mitchell (1809-1810), Isaac Green Mitchell (1810-1881, m. Mary Ann Dudley), Alexander Weldon Mitchell (1812-1891, m. Mary McDaniel), Permelia Mitchell (1814-1891, m. Mr. Ashley, 2nd m. James Elkin), Minerva Mitchell (1816-1822), Matthew DeWitt Mitchell (1819-?, m. Matilda Ruff), William Arnold Mitchell (1822-1895, m. Margaret Skinner). From: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gaclayt2/W_Mitchell.htm

In 1860, Eleanor was listed as Ellen Mitchell, age 79, in the home of her son A. W. Mitchell in Atlanta, Fulton Co., Ga. The fact that she moved to Atlanta before her death gave a descendant of hers claim to be a fifth generation Atlantan.... That descendant was Margaret Mitchell (Marsh) who wrote a rather famous book set in the city where five generations of her family lived....a book called "Gone With The Wind."
