A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW JERSEY with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A076148

BIRTH: Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church, Salem, New Jersey; pg 40; Shows names and births of Eleazor Mayhews' 9 of possible 10 children. Does not show William born 20 May 1781; FHL film#: 1,005,029.

MILITARY: Private in Captain Nieukirk's Company, Second Regiment, Salem County, New Jersey, Militia, in active service December 1776 and January 1777.

A fight took place at Cooper's Creek Bridge where the English surprised a party of Militiamen. Several of them were killed and the rest were captured. Most of the Gloucester fighting men enlisted early in the war. They were marching to Fort Washington, where they were taken prisoner and confined on board the Jersey prison ship.

Historians describe the Jersey as a monster of evil and a high number of prisoners died of disease.

"Eleazar Mayhew was born 8 April 1756 and died 17 November 1828. He served in the Revolutionary War and was a land surveyour and conveyancer. He was descended from Governor Thomas Mayhew, Natucket Island and Martha's Vinyard. Sarah VanMeter married Eleazar Mayhew 1 Jun 1775. She was born 1 Jan 1759 and died 30 March 1827. More about Sarah VanMeter may be found in Heidgerd's "Dubois Genealogy" ".

Eleazer and another 5GGF Nehemiah Richman were both POW's on the HMS Jersey a prison ship in NY Harbor during the Revolutionary War and survived deplorable conditions.

And both went on to live exemplary lives and died of old age
