About Eli or Eliazer Aldridge

From Pam Wilson's Arledge Family History Project:

Don Aldridge wrote (Sept. 1998):

Trying to trace this family is quite frustrating. Since your message of 06 Sept. I have gone back through my records and can add very little if any real information.

The 1820 Federal Census for Anson Co. NC, page #1 lists Caleb Sr. and Caleb Jr. in consecutive households. On page #5 there is Eliazer Aldridge.

I have a copy of a survey for Caleb "Arldrige", Warrant # 125, 26 July 1817. The chainbearers are listed as Thos. Bogan and Eliazer Arldrig.

I also have a copy of Warrant # 6924, and survey, 05 June 1832 for Eli Arledge.

Notice how the spelling variations bounce around.

I have been told that there is an Eli Aldridge buried in the Price Family burying grounds but if so it is in an unmarked grave.

The above survey for Eli states that it joins his existing lands on Chinquapin Creek. Caleb Sr. also had lands on Chinquapin Creek. I have never found a reference to a will for Caleb Sr. in Montgomery or Anson County, NC.

CENSUS etc.

In 1820, in Anson County, NC (categories: males <10, 10-16, 16-18, 16-26, 26-45, >45; females <10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, >45; then number of persons engaged in agriculture/commerce/mfg, then slaves) we find:

Calep ARLDRIGE Sr 010001 11301 20000 (between Price, Presley, Sikes, Smith)

Calep ARLDRIGE Jr 100000 21010 10000 (next door to father)

A few pages later:

Eliazer ALDRIGE 010100 00100 20000 (between Moses Thomas & Joseph Brice). Here, in 1820, he has a 10-15 year old son, but this son does not appear with the family a decade later. He would presumably be on his own at 20-25, if he survived. But who was he?

In 1830 census an ELI ARLEDGE is listed in Anson County, NC (p. 97): 000001/220001: only one male 30-40; 2 females under 5, two females 5-10; one female 30-40. No slaves. Neighbors are Cuthbertson, Price (2), Presson, Presley (2), Hargitt, Preslar, Thomas (2).

The family profile of the ELY ARLEDGE in 1840 Jackson Co, AL census looks suspiciously like this same family: one male 40-50, one female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 15-20, one female 40-50 and two female slaves ages 16-24.

  • AULDRIDGE, Eli 56 M Farmer 190
  • Nancy 54 F
  • Delila 29 F
  • Luvisa 19 F

Where were Eli's other 3 daughters? Probably married, but without first names to trace it is hard to find them. One may have married an Ashberry and had a daughter Lucinda who is living with Eli & family in 1860:

1860 DeKalb Co, AL census (Rawlingsville)

  1. 558
  • Eli Aldridge 63 Farmer 300/500 NC
  • Nancy Aldridge 64 NC cannot R&W
  • Delilah Little 38 NC cannot R&W
  • Lucinda Ashberry 18 F AL
  • Nancy M. Little 7 AL
  • James KP Little 5 AL

Note: Rufus Ashberry 16 is living with Thos B & Jane Little (both 23)

In 1850 & 1860 DeKalb Co we find an Archibald (26/36) & Nancy Ashberry (24/34) both b TN with a children Mary J, Wm & Robt G

In 1860 DeKalb Co AL there is a Perry Shankles (26) b AL wife Lavica (29) b NC and children John F. (4) b MO and Asberry A. (2/12) b AL. Could this be Eli's daughter Luvisa?
