Elijah's family had Southern sympathies during the CIvil War; his son Henry was in McNeill's Rangers. In 1864 the Swamp Dragons (a violent Union milita group, swonr enemies of McNeill's Rangers) raided Elijah's home in the Bland Hills. The Swamps found another of Elijah's sons, George, at the home, chased him into the yard, tortured and killed him. Elijah chiseled his son's gravestone himself (which see).
