About Elijah Boston

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. (Soldier) DAR Ancestor #: A025969

Elijah Boston, son of Mathew and Martha (Benston) Boston, was born in Somerset Co., Md. 25 Feb. 1755 (baptized Coventry); he died, presumably in Accomack Co., Va. before 27 Dec. 1830. He evidently married (after 16 Sept. 1778, probably in 1779) his first cousin, Mary Cottingham, daughter of John Cottingham and Mary Boston, Elijah's aunt; Mary Cottingham was born 12 Feb. 1755; she died before 1796.

By the will of his grandfather, Esau, in 1768 Elijah was bequeathed £35 as well as a quarter of any residual cash. Elijah served in the American Revolution in the 9th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line (John G. Gwathmy, Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, Richmond Va., 1938).

In 1780 Elijah witnessed the first will of his uncle, Jacob Boston; he signed with his mark. His name appears in the 1783 tax list for Worcester Co., in Pitts Creek Hundred, and according to the 1790 Federal Census for Worcester Co. (p. 128) Elijah was head of a household including two males under 16 and three females.

The only other evidence of Elijah's family is found in Accomack Co. (Va.) Order Book 1829-32, p. 217: on 27 Dec. 1830 "It is ordered to be certified that it appears to the Court by satisfactory evidence that Martha Henderson wife of John Henderson, Mary Jackson wife of Stephen Jackson, Nancy Taylor wife of William Taylor and Sally Taylor wife of Preston Taylor are the heirs at law of Elijah Boston who was a soldier in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War."
