Elijah was a son of John and Sarah (Baker) Maxfield. He went to Utah in 1851. Elijah married Helen Tanner on August 24, 1856, and they had nine children. Elijah was a stagecoach driver. In 1857 he worked for the Brigham Young Express and Carrying Company. It ceased operation when the government canceled their mail contract. In 1860 he was working as a lumberman in Salt Lake County. He then became a Pony Express rider for the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, which was discontinued in 1861. He also served as a spy in General Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of Utah. He was a lumber contractor by 1870, living in Cottonwood. In 1880 he and his family were living in Fremont, Utah, where he was a farmer. They moved to Thurber by 1900, and Lyman, Utah, by 1910.
