His parents were William Ruthbun and Tamer Candied Phelps. He moved to Fishkill, New York to teach school. On 30th of December 1821, Elijah married Wealthy Lawrence, shortly after their marriage Wealthy died on 25 June 1824 of unknown causes.

Later Elijah married a student Jane Wright, she was born on 30th of April 1809 in Fishkill, New York, she was the mother of fourteen children, according to the Register General of the D.A.R. states that there isn't any proven proof that Elijah and Jane were married. There is proof of their marriage through a family Bible which it recorded the event.

There is one more information verified through census that in late February 1818 Elijah meet Elizabeth Baker, she was a student of the age of 13 years of age. Within 10 months Elizabeth became pregnant and died of child both on 6th of January 1819. As she gave birth to my 3rd Great Grandfather, its believed that either Wealthy or Jane raised my 3rd Great Grandfather.
