About Eliza Ann Bennett

Death certificate attached.

Born Nov. 13, 1812 in Bridgeton, Cumberland, New Jersey. Died May 17, 1902 in Detroit, Michigan. She died of senility and exhaustion. She was a widow, married once, for 19 years, with one child. She was to be buried in Xenia, Ohio, although I have not found her grave. Her relatives, the Petticrew family, are buried in Xenia.

It took awhile to figure out who E.A. Bennett was. She was the daughter of William A. Mints and his FIRST wife, Betsy Shaw. She married her step-brother, Timothy Bennett, son of Sarah Davis Bennett Mints and Timothy Bennett. So she was DOUBLY related to Martha Ann Mintz Petticrew and her children, since Martha Ann was the daughter of Sarah Davis Bennett Mints and William Mints.

Her path parallels that of Sarah Davis' descendants perfect.

  • Birth 1811 in New Jersey: William Mints and Betsy Shaw were married in Cumberland County, New Jersey in 1803 and lived there until 1817 approximately.
  • Marriage 1830 to Timothy Bennett in Franklin County Indiana: William Mints and Sarah Davis (second wife) were living in Franklin County, Indiana by that time. Timothy Bennett was the son of Sarah Davis with her first husband (Timothy Bennett).
  • Residence 1850 in Xenia, Greene, Ohio: Martha Ann Mints Petticrew and her husband, Algernon Sidney Petticrew lived in Xenia. Eliza Ann was living with her daughter Mary E. Bennett.
  • Residence 1860 in Xenia, Greene, Ohio: Living with her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Bennett McMillan and husband, David McMillan.
  • Residence 1870 in Xenia, Greene, Ohio: Living with her daughter's widower.
  • Residence in 1880 in St. Louis Missouri: E.A. Bennett, widowed, was living her nieces Belle Petticrew and Mary Jane Petticrew Johnson.
  • Residence in 1884 in Detroit, Michigan: Eliza Bennett, widow of Timothy Bennett in U.S. City Directories 1821-1989 (Ancestry)
  • Residence in 1900 in Detroit, Michigan: Eliza Bennett living with her granddaughter, Nellie Adele McMillan. The McMillan or their in-laws, the Liggetts, were living in Detroit.

1900 US Census

Living with her granddaughter, Nellie McMillan (Carrie Helen McMillan), daughter of David McMillan and Mary Elizabeth Bennett, in Detroit where David McMillan's sister and her family lived.

Notice that she says her father was born in Holland and her mother was born in England. That's not likely to be true, but probably indicates her ancestry. Mintz could be Dutch or German, but I have always assumed it was Dutch, given the heavily Dutch population in Southern New Jersey. And Davis is British Isles, could be English, Welsh, or even Irish.

Living with her "niece," Belle Petticrew Roberts in St. Louis, Missouri at the time of the U.S. Census in 1880. Widowed and born 1811 in New Jersey.

She may be the widow of a Bennett half-brother of Belle Petticrew's mother, Martha Ann Mints.

That is, the daughter-in-law of Belle's grandmother, Sarah Davis Bennett Mints, married to an unnamed son of her first marriage to Timothy Bennett.

Also living with Belle is her sister, Mary Jane Petticrew Johnson, Mary Jane's husband, Moses Perry Johnson, and their daughter, Lucy.

So "E.A. Bennett" would be the aunt of both Belle and Mary Jane Petticrew.

She was born in 1811 in New Jersey according to her statement on the 1880 US Census.

By 1880, she was widowed and her name was given as E.A. Bennett. She was listed as the "aunt" and living in St. Louis with William S. Robert and his wife Belle Petticrew Robert and her sister Mary Jane Petticrew Johnson and husband, Moses Perry Johnson.

If she is the aunt of Belle and Mary Jane Petticrew, it may be that she is the half-sister of their mother, Martha Ann Mints.

Martha Ann's father, William A. Mints, was married to Betsy Shaw (?Elizabeth) in Cumberland County, NJ in 1803 and was living there when Eliza Ann was born. William A. Mints moved to Franklin County, Indiana around 1817. He subsequently moved to Hancock County, Indiana where he got a land grant of 320 acres in 1837.

So hypothetically, Eliza Ann Mints is shown in our tree as the half-sister of Martha Ann Mints.

The Franklin County, Indiana marriage records include the following marriage:

* MINTS, ELIZA ANN m. BENNETT, TIMOTHY Franklin Co IN 3-18-1830

This is interesting because Timothy Bennett was the name of Martha Ann Mints' mother's FIRST husband. So did Eliza Ann Mints marry her step-brother? We have no further record of Timothy Bennett at this point.
