About Eliza Butler

Susan Morgan's biography of Anna Leonowens (Bombay Anna, 2008) records Eliza marrying Tobias Butler on 3 July 1831 in Seroor/Sirur/Sevoor (very near Poona/Pune). Tobias was an "Irishman from Kilkenny who was in the Sappers and Miners..who had enlisted in Liverpool and sailed to Bombay on the 'Edinburgh' along with Patrick Donohoe." p.34

Morgan goes on to say that they were stationed along with the Donohoes in Bergaum but then Toby was assigned to Surat (a port up the coast from Bombay) and there Eliza died of an illness on September 7 1839. p.35.

Habegger, in his biography (Masked, 2014) confirms the same dates and places and gives his reference as N/3/14/208. He records her as having 2 daughters - Henrietta Cooper Butler born 25 April 1833 and married 15 Dec 1846 and Louisa Ellen Butler born 11 July 1835 in Belgaum and married on 3 August 1854 in Sattarawunder p.417.

Dates indicate Eliza was about 15 when she married and was married for about 8 years to Tobias, so it is quite likely that there were more births than these two over the years.

Marriage transcription: At Seroor, 1st Corporal T. Butler, engineer corps, to Eliza, daughter of the late Lieut. Glasscott, H.C. military service.
