Eliza Hammer (Rash)

ELIZABETH “Eliza” ELLEN RASH, daughter of JOHN RASH and MARY GLOVER, was born in 1870 in Iowa and died in 1931 in Hardin Co., IA (stroke). She was a member of the Friends church at Stanford. On July 3, 1886 she married ADAM MARK HAMMER, son of SETH HAMMER and ELIZABETH GOTSCHALL MUSGROVE. He was born in 1863 in Jasper County, Iowa, and died in November 1933 at the home of his daughter LaVada Hammer Bittner in Hardin Co., IA (Prostate cancer).

Note: The above is as found at familysearch.com. There was no document image to compare to this text. The name for Adam's mother, Mary E. Guntshaw, seemed to conflict with the name I remembered from other records, Mary Elizabeth Musgrove. But I looked at other records and saw ELIZABETH GOTSHALL MUSGROVE. So her maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Gotshall (or Guntshaw) and she married twice, to Allen Musgrove and to Seth Hammer. Guntshaw and Gotshall are not the same, but they're similar enough that it's obvious both are interpretations of hard-to-read handwritten records. Geth Hammer is obviously a misread of Seth Hammer.

The 1880 census shows Robert's grandson William (son of Robert's son William) and William's infant son Orville living in Robert's home. Also living there was another grandchild of Robert's, Eliza, daughter of John Anderson Rash. Also living there was Robert's wife (William and Eliza's grandmother) Sethy Bryant Rash, who would die that year.

Hammers Bankrupt.
Adam M. Hammer and Eliza E. Hammer, his wife, of Union, were adjudicated bankrupt last Monday and the first meeting of creditors will be held the 12th of August.
Adam Hammer has against him secured claims to the amount of $1,477.15, and unsecured $1,396.90, making a total of $2,874.05. His assets are, real estate $200, other $582, besides $435, which is exempt.
Eliza Hammer's financial status is the same, except that she has $1,166.90 in unsecured claims. The assets will not meet the secured claims, which are held principally by Union and Whitten business men. There are numerous judgments appearing against the petitioners, who are farmers.
The secured claims will not be paid off at 50 cents on the dollar and those having unsecured claims can whistle and wait for Annie.
