Eliza was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Eliza Looney was born in the Cherokee Nation (West) about 1824. According to researcher James Hicks she was the daughter of John Looney, who was later the Chief of the Western Cherokee, and Betsy Webber. [1] The Looney family was forced to move from the Cherokee land in Arkansas to the new Indian Territory in 1827. Eliza married Daniel Rattlinggourd about 1844. [2] Eliza appears on the 1851 Old Settler Roll, living in the Tahlequah District with their children Looney, Charles, Sarah, and John. (Daniel is on the Drennan Roll of Emigrant Cherokee). [3] They were also the parents of Timothy, Thomas, and Alexander. [4] Eliza passed away in 1867.
