About Elizabeth Anthony

Elizabeth Clark, the daughter of Christopher and Penelope (Johnson), married her first cousin Joseph Anthony who was born in Henrico County, VA in 1713. Joseph served as a Patriot and took the oath of Allegiance in Henry County in 1777.

After the death of her husband Joseph, and after she had moved to Wilkes County, GA, Elizabeth made three trips back to Virginia on horseback preaching the gospel as a Quaker preacher. She is said to have lived to be 105 years old.

Family Story

  • Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Anthony, Sr. was truly a superwoman. She was born 15 February, 1720 (see Quaker Meeting notes document, attached, reflecting husband's date of birth) in Hanover County, lived to be 105 years of age and saw 300 of her descendants. After the death of her husband, she moved from Virginia to Wilkes Co., GA and lived on Broad River. It is said that she died in Franklin Co. There is evidence that 12 of her children, and many kinsmen came to Georgia at about the same time. She became a Quaker preacher and rode back through the wilderness preaching the Gospel. She is said to have made the trip back to Virginia three times. Many prominent families descended from her. It is said that she and her sister Rachel were given a half dozen silver spoons by their parents. Some of the spoons are treasured family heirlooms.

Elizabeth is my 6th great-grandmother. I descend from her daughter Agnes.

According to what I've read in various books and other sources of information, she lived to be 105 years old. Making her death about 1825. We was living in GA when she died. As of this posting (21 Feb 2016), I've found no record of her actual death date.
