PLATTSBURGH -- Elizabeth Barber died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 25, 1925, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Hogarth) Mulligan. Betty graduated grade school at age 14 and then went to work at Blair's Wee Store in Glasgow. During World War II, she served in Scotland's Land Army, working as a farm hand, while the men were at war. Although, she was a skinny city kid, she worked on the Rough Mussel Dairy Farm and delivered milk using a horse with a buggy behind. Following the war, she worked at Biggars Music Store in Glasgow, a job that nourished her love of music. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1952, where she worked for a Plattsburgh family to repay her passage. She met George J. Barber in an adult art class at Plattsburgh High School. She and George were married on Dec. 1, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Plattsburgh. Together they lived life to the fullest for 54 years. They raised six children (and numerous critters) at the Macombstead and provided a home to many. She is beloved for her kindness, wisdom, generous spirit and sense of humor. Betty is survived by her husband, George; five children, Eileen Allen and her husband, Peter, of Plattsburgh, Thomas Barber of Plattsburgh, Elizabeth Marie Barber of Plattsburgh, David Barber and his wife, Ann, of Mombassa, Kenya, and James Barber and his wife, Carol, of Plattsburgh; one brother, John "Jackie" Mulligan and his wife, Mary, of Glasgow; and four grandchildren. Her daughter and twin sister of David, Helen Barber Klaus, died in 1992; and a son, Mulligan Barber, died in infancy. A special heartfelt thanks goes to the "Nurses on R-5" from Betty's family. "An Afternoon of Remembrance" will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, on the second floor of the North Country Co-op, on Bridge Street from 2 to 4 p.m. Arrangements are with the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh
