Elizabeth H. Wirkus "Betty" Battle Creek Elizabeth H. "Betty" Wirkus, 96, of Battle Creek, died March 18, 2003, at home. Betty was born November 11, 1906, in Buetow, Germany, the daughter of Johannes and Anna (Von-Modrezewski) Hering. She came to the United States in 1951 from Berlin and settled in Battle Creek. Betty managed the Woman's League Clubhouse from 1955 to 1970 when she retired, she had also been employed at the Pretzel House located in Sears for three years. Betty was a member of the.. German Club in Battle Creek, in 1983 she was awarded the "Memorial Service Cross First Class" by the West German Government for assisting in laying wreaths at the German graves in Fort Custer Cemetery. She enjoyed fishing, bingo, playing rummy and was a member of the Sunshine Band at Cherry Hill Manor. Betty is survived by a daughter, Gertrude E.
