Elizabeth H. Wirkus "Betty" Battle Creek Elizabeth H. "Betty" Wirkus, 96, of Battle Creek, died March 18, 2003, at home. Betty was born November 11, 1906, in Buetow, Germany, the daughter of Johannes and Anna (Von-Modrezewski) Hering. She came to the United States in 1951 from Berlin and settled in Battle Creek. Betty managed the Woman's League Clubhouse from 1955 to 1970 when she retired, she had also been employed at the Pretzel House located in Sears for three years. Betty was a member of the.. German Club in Battle Creek, in 1983 she was awarded the "Memorial Service Cross First Class" by the West German Government for assisting in laying wreaths at the German graves in Fort Custer Cemetery. She enjoyed fishing, bingo, playing rummy and was a member of the Sunshine Band at Cherry Hill Manor. Betty is survived by a daughter, Gertrude E. "Trudy" Heather of Battle Creek, grandchildren, Randy E. Bushee of Richland, Janet A. Krick of Battle Creek, Cynthia D. Corder of Columbus, Mississippi, five great-grandchildren, sister, Frances Burchardt of Hanover, Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore J. in 1964, daughter, Ursel in 1945 during the bombings in Ger-, many and a son, Franz in 1998. Friends may call at the Far-ley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home after 2:00 p.m. Thursday where family will be present from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel with Grandson Randy E.
