About Elizabeth Clark Boswell

DAR Magazine, 1917 http://books.google.com/books?id=ZnwmAQAAIAAJ pg 357

"6031 Clark Boswell McCloud

Will some one having access to Clark Genealogies please give me data desired? The Clark family whose line I am after were prominent people and we are told furnished several prominent Rev soldiers. One or more serving with Francis Marion. A sister, Elizabeth Clark, married Colonel John Boswell of the British Army. They had one child, Elizabeth Clark Boswell born Nov 17 1775. She married William McCloud and they went to Ohio to live. Served as County Judge and filled other positions of trust. Elizabeth McCloud was requested by a committee appointed for the purpose to name the county seat of Hardin County and she named it Kenton after Simon Kenton the friend and companion of her husband. I want the names of her grandparents uncles and aunts with dates so far as possible of births marriages and deaths"

Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine, Volume 50

5042. BOSWELL. Eliz. Boswell m Wm. McCloud in 1793 and went to Greene Co., Ohio, where her husband d ab 1850. In 1851 she went with her two sons, Robert and Wm. McCloud to Wisconsin. The families of two of her daughters also moved to Wisconsin. Several of her uncles, named Clark, served with Marion. What were the names of her mother, and grandparents? She attended the Moravian Convent at Bethlehem, Penna. and from there we have: "Registration under date of 1791, Eliza Boswell, born 1779, Ward of Clark, Charleston, S. C”

An account of Gen. Simon Kenton's life on the Ohio (including close association with Daniel Boone) is provided here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~henryhowesbook/champaign.html Note that another of his close associates is an officer George Clark, who may be part of the Clark family referenced above.

Some DAR inquiries - possibly from another McCloud descendent? looks promising but need deciphering:

Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine, Volumes 48-49

4641. BOSWELL-CLARK. "Marriage Record, Swedes Church, Philadelphia, Dec. 17, 1777. Boswell, John and Jean Clark. Eliza Boswell, b 1779, Ward of Clark, Charleston, S. C." Will some one please give me names of Jean Clark’s parents and her father’s Rev. war service. Also names of her sisters and brothers. Family tradition has it that the men of this family were famous soldiers. Was the Charleston Clark, guardian of Eliza (or Elizabeth) Boswell, a brother of Jean Clark? What was his name? Was John Boswell a British officer? C. L. McC.

(from next Volume - https://books.google.com/books?id=Gjw-AQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA284 )

4774. BOSWELL—CLARK. In Penna. Archives, Second Series, Vol. III, p 308 is record of marriage in Swedes Church, Phila. of John Boswell and Jean Clark, Dec. 17, 1777. In the Register of the Moravian Seminary, Bethlehem, Penna. for 1791 is the statement “Eliza Boswell, b 1779, ward of Clark, Charleston, 5. C." \\’as the above Eliza the dau. of John and Jean (Clark) Boswell? Any information of either of these people greatly desired. C. L. McC.

*** - possible theory on the Elizabeth Clark's brothers. Elizabeth McCloud famously suggested the name of the town of Kenton because Simon Kenton was a close friend of William McCloud. Note though that Kenton was a generation older than William McCloud - perhaps Kenton knew them through an uncle of Elizabeth - there was a mountain fighter named George Clark who fought alongside Kenton and Alexander Montgomery in the Ohio Valley during the Revolutionary War ???? Could Gen. George Rogers Clark be one of the "famous" soldier brothers of Elizabeth Clark? He also seems to have a brother that was a General.

The GENI profile for Georg Rogers Clark does say he has a sister Elizabeth, but that she married an Anderson. https://www.geni.com/people/Elizabeth-Anderson/6000000008470513949 ***

Census records for Sarah Powell consistently give year of birth as 1800 OR 1802, and location as Ohio. This period would have been before Ohio statehood, but I take it to imply it was in the Northwest territory.
