About Elizabeth Byles

ID: I6795 Name: Elizabeth Mather Surname: Mather Given Name: Elizabeth Sex: F Birth: 6 Jan 1665/1666 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Christening: 3 Feb 1665/1666 Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Death: 19 Aug 1745 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Burial: Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Reference Number: 21 _UID: 748BFAAAE21BD6118724B5B86A52743E0D37 Note: !Elizabeth Mather was the sister of Reverend Doctor Cotton Mather and Reverend Samuel Mather, daughter of Reverend Doctor Increase Mather and grand-daughter of both Reverend Richard Mather and Reverend John Cotton. Her only son was Reverend Doctor Mather Byles, minister of the Hollis Street Church, Boston from 1733 until 1776. He sympathized with the British and his connection with the church ceased shortly after the Americans regained control of the city of Boston in 1776. As part of the will of Reverend Doctor Increase Mather, the education of Mather Byles was made the responsibility of Reverend Doctor Cotton Mather, his uncle. The young Byles was left fatherless and Reverend Doctor Increase must have loved him dearly to have mentioned him several times among his final words. His son, Reverend Mather Byles, was settled over the Congregational Church of New Haven, Connecticut in 1757. Afterwards he became an Episcopalian, and settled in St. Johns, New Brunswick.
