John Kettell was baptized in Aug. 1622, the son of Eleazer Kettle and Bridget Pleasance.

He died 12 Oct 1685.

"Gloucester; a subject of court record in 1641, then a lad; cooper; as. 32, 1653 (per deposition) ; m. Elizabeth Allen, dau. of William of Salem, who m. (2) Samuel Corning, 1688; d. at Salem, Oct. 12, 1685 (per inventory). Estate - Will nun. culpable: Declaration of gift to wife and chn. sworn to by John Cresy and wife Sarah; testimony of J. C. at court, se. 26, 1690. Inventory, Nov. 10, 1685: 'Farm near Nashaway, 300 acres,' £64; total £139." [1]

John Kettle with wife Elizabeth had children born in Gloucester from 1654 to 1665; he also appeared in Essex court records, always associated with Gloucester men, from 1655 to 1664 [EQC 1:390, 2:37, 38, 64, 124, 237, 3:203]. No record of this John Kettle appears in Essex court again until 1679 [EQC 7:222]. He was not the John Kettell of Charlestown, later a resident of New Hampshire. John’s wife and some family members were captured and held hostage by Indians at Lancaster, MA during King Philip's War. At least two of John's children were killed during that incident.

Samuel Corning’s wife Elizabeth died in 1688, and Samuel remarried to the widow Elizabeth Kettell on 13 Nov 1688 at Beverly; she must have been a family friend, for Samuel had administered her husband’s will a few years earlier. Samuel died in 1694 (dates seen as 11 March 1694 and burial date 14 May 1694).

Anderson's Great migration profile of William Allen indicates that his daughter Elizabeth m1 by 1654 John Kettle; m2 13 Nov 1688 in Beverly, Samuel Corning.

"the claim that she married secondly William 'Raymond' [Essex Ant 2:135] is based on a misinterpretation of the final settlement of her fathers estate; her daughter Mary Kettle had married William Raiment, who received a portion of the estate." [1]
