About Elizabeth Crow
Elizabeth Goodwin
- BIRTH: 1620 England.
- DEATH: Died after 26 Jun 1717
- BURIAL: Burial Details Unknown
- MEMORIAL ID: 34132660
- Parents: William Goodwin 1591–1672 and Elizabeth White 1591–1676.
- Spouse: John Crow 1606–1685
ELIZABETH, only known child of William & Elizabeth (White) Goodwin, was born say 1620. She married by about 1640 John Crow of Hartford (probably as his second wife, since his eldest daughter Esther was born about 1628 and so was too old to be daughter of Elizabeth Goodwin).
In 1674 "Ozias Goodwin aged 78 years and W[illia]m Goodwin aged about 45 years" testified that "Mr. W[illia]m Goodwin deceased and Mr. John Crow his son-in-law were co-partners in their buyings and sellings"
Source: Anderson's Great Migration Begins.
The following are children of John Crow, thought to be of his second wife, Elizabeth Goodwin:
- Elizabeth, born 1644; married (1) William Warren, of Hartford; (2) Phineas Wilson, of Hartford, a wealthy merchant from Dublin; he died May 22, 1692, and after his death she continued his business, and became the most extensive banker in the Colony. She was accustomed to loan money on mortgage not only to citizens of Hartford, but in the adjacent towns, and she managed her affairs with wisdom and judgment. She died July 9 or 19, 1727, aged 86 (?), leaving a large property and many legacies,
- Sarah, born March I, 1646-7, in Hartford; married November 1, 1661, Daniel White, of Hatfield; died June 29, 1719, aged 72.
- Anne, or Hannah, born July 13, 1649; married March 7, 1667-8, Thomas Dickinson; he was one of the first settlers of Hadley, but removed to Wethersfield in 1679; died there, 1716.
- Mehitabel, born about 1652; married September 24, 1668, Colonel Samuel Partridge, of Hadley and Hatfield; died December 8, 1730, aged 78.
- Mary, married (1) December 27, 1666, Noah Coloman, of Hatfield; (2) September 16, 1680, Peter Montague, of Hadley; she died October 12, 1720
- Ruth, married (1) December 21, 1671, William Gaylord, of Hadley; (2) about 1681, John Haley, of Hadley.
- Daniel, born about 1656; lived in Hartford; died August 12, 1693, aged 37, without children.
Research Notes
Most of the birth dates of John Crow's children are estimates, and Nathaniel is usually listed fourth. However, based on known birth dates, ages at death, and marriage dates, their birth order is probably: Esther (d. 1700, age 72), John (d. 1667), Samuel (m. 1671), Elizabeth (b. 1644), Mary (m. 1666), Sarah (b. 1 Mar 1646/7), Hannah/Anna (b. 13 Jul 1649), Ruth (m1. 1671), Mehitable (d. 1730, age 78), Nathaniel (m. c1684), and Daniel (d. 1693, age 37).
If Nathaniel was born as early as 1634, he would have been over 50 when his first child was born in 1685. More likely his birth was between 1642 and 1656 which means his mother was John Crow's second wife Elizabeth Goodwin.
