About Elizabeth B. Engle
Elizabeth's native tongue was probably Pennsylvania Dutch, a dialect of German ("Deutsch") and English combined. She could probably write in German because PA Dutch was only a spoken language. Also, as Jesse explains in one of his later letters, Elizabeth did not have much English schooling and did not knowhow to fully write in English. This accounts for the consistently misspelled word in Elizabeth's original letters.
