The city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is named after her by her husband, the Governor Rufane Shaw Donkin.
On 6 June 1820 Sir Rufane Donkin (1773-1841) christened (then just a settlement) "Port Elizabeth" in honour of his late wife Elizabeth Frances née Markham "The most perfect of human beings", who had died in India two years previously.
