The charter of 1691 merged the Plymouth colony and Maine into the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Maine shifted between French and English sovereignty and mostly aligned with Nova Scotia until the Revolutionary War.
Maine remained part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820. In 1815, the people of Maine began Maine was disappointed in Massachusetts' lack of protection during the War of 1812. So, in 1815, the people of Maine began pushing for statehood.
On March 15, 1820, Maine became the nation's 23rd state after a series of votes.
