More About John Jay and Elizabeth Pugh: Marriage: 04 Mar 1773, Bush River MM, SC

Elizabeth (Pugh) Jay. or as she appears to have been commonly called, Betty, was the second of the seven daughters of thomas Pugh and Ann (Wright) Pugh and was granddaughter of Jesse Pugh who was the grandson of the immigrant, Ellis Pugh, born in Wales 1656, came to Pennsylvania in 1687, where he died in 1718. John Jay and Elizabeth Pugh were marreid at Bush River Meeting of Friends, South CArolina, March 4th, 1773. They were parents of eleven children, seven sons, and four daughters, all born in South Carolina, and all grew to maturity, married, and had families.

John and Elizabeth Jay removed with their family from South Carolina to Ohio, in 1802, and settled at first at Waynesille, Ohio, engaging in mercantile business. He remained there about five years. During that time he made two trips to Baltimore, Md. with his own five horse team for goods.

John Jay and family appear to have removed to Miami County, Ohio, in 1808, and settled on land entered from the government. There, in a few years, he was surrounded by the families of six of his sons and two of his daughters. Among their seventy three grand children, nine were named John and six named Elizabeth.
