About Elizabeth Johnson

STILL RESEARCHING:

Obit: Mrs. Enos Johnson Dies at 76; Was Ill Since January: Succumbs At Home of Son, Roy, North of Upper Alton – Mrs. Elizabeth Ruyle Johnson, 76, died at 5 o’clock this morning at the country home of her son, Roy R. Johnson, north of Upper Alton after an illness which began the middle of January. Although confined to her bed, Mrs. Johnson had been cheerful and interested in her family and friends until yesterday when she lapsed into semi-consciousness. Mrs. Johnson was the widow of the late Enos Johnson, Upper Alton business man, whose death occurred in 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Upper Alton 41 years ago from their country home, west of Medora. Mrs. Johnson united with the Bethel Baptist Church in her early life and upon removal to Upper Alton, with her husband, transferred her membership to the Upper Alton Baptist Church, of which she was an active member until declining years lessened her activities. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three children, Lieut.-Com. Herman W. Johnson of the United States Navy, now stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard; Mrs. Amanda Jane Edwards, wife of Albert J. Edwards of Paris, Illinois, and Roy Ruyle Johnson of Upper Alton. Five grandchildren also survive, Enos and Lucille Edwards of Paris, and Ann Elizabeth, Robert and Helen Johnson of Alton. Three sisters and a brother also survive, Mrs. Ann Ruff of Medora, widow of Viley J. Ruff; Mrs. Amos Johnson of Medora, Mrs. John F. Fink of Medora, and Oliver T. Ruyle, Goose Creek, Texas. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of William L. Ruyle and Mary Jane Elliott Ruyle, of Ruyle township in Jersey county, which was named for the family. William L. Ruyle was its first supervisor. Mrs. Johnson was born on the Ruyle homestead, six miles west of Medora on the Medora-Kane road. In her church and social circles, Mrs. Johnson was known for her sturdy character. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Johnson had traveled extensively and until the time of her last illness maintained a keen interest in current events as well as literary matters. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Streeper funeral home, with her pastor, the Rev. Dr. A. Augustus Hobson, officiating. The body will be taken to Oakland cemetery, west of Medora, and laid to rest beside her husband in the family plot. Friends may view the body at the funeral home after 6 o’clock this evening.
