About Elizabeth Schermerhorn Jones
Rhinebeck Gazette, 1 June 1876; Elizabeth Schermerhorn Jones, daughter of late Edward Renshaw died 5:29 at 66 years. Buried Episcopal Church, Rhinebeck, (actually the section of the cemetery where she is buried used to be reserved for Episcopal burials, there was never any burials at the Episcopal Church)
Miss Jones built a large home circa 1851 called Wyndcliffe in Rhinebeck, NY. This home property was just south of Wildercliffe, home of Mary Garrettson. The home was designed and built by George Veitch who also resided in Rhinebeck and is buried in this cemetery.
The family of Elizabeth Schermerhorn Jones is said to have given rise to the saying "Keeping up with the Jones." Wyndclyff was one of the first, if not the first, river "mansions" built in Rhinebeck in the 19th century.
Elizabeth Jones' niece was Edith Wharton and spent much of her childhood at Wyndclyffe. The home was eluded to in both her novels, "A Backward Glance" and "Hudson River Bracketed"
