• Rappahannock County Court 14th of April 1690
• - Ordered that the Interrogatories put to ELIZABETH LAWSON of this County, Single Woman, touching a suspition she is charged with of having a bastard Child late come of her body & concealing and burying the same, be of record, as also what answers the sd ELIZABETH made thereto
• Q. Do you own what is reported by the Jury of women? A. I ovine it all
• Q. Who helped you to bury the Child?
• A. No body sr.
• Q. Where were the penple of the house when you were delivered?
• A. All in the house, my Father & Unkle - my Father walked about the outward room all night and in the morning went to fetch BETTY JACKSON
• Q. When was the Child borne, and when was it buryed?
• A. It was borne about two houres before day & buryed whilst my Father went to call BETTY JACKSON
• Q. Did yor: Father know anything of it?
• A. No, not any thing at all
• Q. What were yor: motives to bury it privately? A. For feare of my Fathers anger
• Q. Who was the Father of the Child
• A. THOMAS LAWSON
• Q. What did you propose to THO: LAWSON when you found your selfe with Child? A. Nothing at all. I did neer speake to him about it
• Q. Did yor: Father know when you were delivered?
• A. No not any at all of it
• ELIZABETH LAWSON of this County, Single Woman, being charged before Colnll. JOHN STONE wth: the suspition of having a bastard Child late borne of her body and with the concealing & burying therefof, By virtue of a Warrant from the sd Colnil. STONE a Jury of able Matrons were impannelled & sworne to serch the body as the sd ELIZ. and enquire into the fact who returned their verdict to this Court and the sd ELIZABETH being also brought before this Court, and upon her Examinacon confessing the same, The Court thought fitt and do accordingly order that the High Sheriff of this County or his Deputy do take into safe Custody the body of the sd ELIZ: LAWSON & her to deteyne without Baile or main:prize and safely convay her to JAMES CITTY to answer the sd fact before the Honrble. President & Councell the 4th day of the next Genll. Court
