About Elizabeth "Isabella" Lewis

Curator's Note: Conflicting versions of who her father was--either Warner or Miller. Documentation is needed. (Found in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volumes 1-2, p. 285, will of James Miller (d. 1678) - names sister "Mrs. Isabella Lewis, wife to Major John Lewis".)

[Part of the problem is that she was christened "Elizabeth", but for some reason everyone called her "Isabella".] Note: Elizabeth "Isabella" Miller was the YOUNGER of two sisters.

[Another part of the problem is that John Lewis of "Chemokins" married Elizabeth/Isabella MILLER, and his son, "Councillor" John Lewis, married Elizabeth WARNER. Careless genealogists hashed them up.]

Isabella Warner allegedly married a man named Miller as her first husband, before she married John Lewis, but I have not been able to find documentation for this. However, I consider this likely, since there are so many "trees" out there listing Isabella Warner and Isabella Miller with the same birthdate, death date, etc so I'm going to assume this has some basis in fact and keep searching for proof. This is entirely supposition on my part and there may be two entirely seperate Isabellas.
There has been much misinformation passed on about the wife of Major Lewis. From their son’s gravestone it was known that her name was Isabella. She was Isabella Miller, although she is not mentioned in her father’s will she is in her brother James Miller Jr's. She was the daughter of James Miller Sr., who settled in York County about 1648. James received a grant of 150 acres on Rowlston Creek and died in 1657. It can now be determined that she was the one interred as Mrs. Isabella Yard born 24 August 1640 and died 9 February 1703/4, she having married Robert Yard after Major Lewis’ death. John Lewis married Isabella Miller, daughter of James Miller. Their daughter-in-law was Elizabeth Isabelle Warner (daughter of Augustine Warner and Mildred Reade) who married Colonel John "Councillor" Lewis II son of John Lewis and Isabella Miller. Amos Eagle Elliston<private> Elliston (Sher) Isabella's gravestone is in the small cemetery in Warner Hall, Gloucester Co., VAwhere Emigrant John is also buried. This would indicate she died before Major John, and he had her buried in his family cemetery and ordered a stone for her.
