Elizabeth Lumsden

Since at least 1909 genealogy researchers have attributed the Elizabeth Duke who married George Lumsden as the daughter of Clevears Chisholm Duke Sr. 1718-1784, but that has now been disproved based upon the following:

1. - Clevears Chisholm Duke’s will states his son John Duke was deceased

2. - John Duke (son of Marrey) witnessed Clevears Chisholm Duke’s 1784 will and per the will was a nephew.

3. - George Lumsden was one of the Executors of Clevears Chisholm Duke’s 1784 Louisa Co., VA. will,

4. – There are no Lumsden grandchildren referenced in the 1800 Louisa Co. VA Chancery court case among Clevears Chisholm Dukes nineteen grandchildren.

5. - John Duke of Louisa County, VA., the nephew of Clevears Chisholm Duke, wrote his will in 1807 (probated in 1819), stated his sister was Elizabeth Lumsden, this was 23 years after Clevears Chisholm Duke listed his son John Duke as deceased.

6. - per Louisa County, VA tax records there was only one John Duke in Louisa Co., VA between 1784 and 1800 when the tax records stop. That was Clevears Chisholm Duke’s nephew John Duke, brother of Elizabeth Lumdsen and son of Marston Duke Jr. (aka Marrey).
