Wife of Rev. John Love William Mayhew.
Daughter of Thomas Self and Elizabeth Jenkins Self.
Granddaughter of Henry and Martha (Cox) Self, Ezekiel and Mary Jenkins; great-granddaughter of Francis Self, Capt. John Jenkins and Martha (Garner) Jenkins of Billingsgate. Billingsgate, renamed Bladensfield, was over 300 years old when it burned in November 1996.
(ref.: Jenkins of the Northern Neck of Virginia by Amelia Gilreath.)
According to Jenkins of the Northern Neck of Virginia by Amelia Gilreath, past president of the National Genealogical Society, Elizabeth Self Mayhew's grandmother Martha Garner Jenkins was a great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Gosnold Keene, first cousin of explorer Bartholomew Gosnold who discovered Martha's Vineyard which was named for his daughter, Martha Gosnold.
The Self family bible showing Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth and her birthdate (which matches the tombstone of Elizabeth Self Mayhew) was printed in Edinburgh in 1734. The Bible record was published in "The Family of Josiah Franklin Self and Frances Augusta Self" (1939), by Victor H. Self, 2nd Edition (1952). It was last reprinted in “A History of the Family of Self (1978) by Joseph Charles Self.
Elizabeth Self Mayhew was a sister of Penelope (died young), Ezekiel, Presley, Charnock, and Joseph Self. An early published transcription of the Self family bible misread "Charnock" Self as "Clarinda" Self.
Some transcriptions give her birth date as 1756 and place of birth as Fairfax County. The Selfs lived in a part of Fairfax County that became Loudoun County in 1757.
Two letters (1 April 1926 and 5 Sept 1926) written by Elizabeth Self Mayhew's granddaughter Belle Mayhew Rose to her cousin Thomas Clay Mayhew give her grandparents' names John Mayhew and Elizabeth Self. The same is also stated in a letter from great-granddaughter Annie Mayhew McLellan, 11 March 1926. Mrs. Rose also stated that Elizabeth Self was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. In some of the letters, she spelled her grandmother's name Selph. It is possible that she remembered hearing of Self relatives living in Dinwiddie or that some of the Mayhews received letters from Self relatives in Dinwiddie.
