Elizabeth Mercer

John Mercer III, born in Ireland or England in 1676. He came to America in 1690 and died in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania. He was alive in 1740 according to the Mercer Heirs Association Report. He first married Mary Elizabeth Bentley at Elizabeth Port NJ in 1708; she died in 1711 or 1712. He then married Sarah Ann Moore in 1714 or 1715. John Mercer III and Elizabeth Bentley had a son: Gideon.

John and Sarah Ann (Moore) Mercer III had 11 children. Their first child was Edward, born December 12, 1716, in Pennsylvania.

I have been told that there is no historical evidence of the existence of a Gideon Mercer.He is purely fiction.Elizabeth Bentley was supposed to have inherited a claim to New Jersey and her name found its way into many Mercer lineages about 1900, corrupting them.There is supposed to be a great load of material about this hoax or scam stored in Michigan.
