Obituary: Teutopolis Press - January 7, 1943

MRS. Elizabeth METTE DEAD

Mrs. Elizabeth Mette, nee Esker, died December 31, 1942 at 1:20 P. M. at the home of her son, Joseph Mette in Bishop township. She had been ill or about six weeks. She was born March 7, 1865 making her age at the time of her death 77 years, 5 months and 24 days.

Elizabeth Esker was born in Watson township, the daughter of Henry and Maria Esker. She lived in Watson township until she married Herman Joseph Mette, November 16, 1886. To this union twelve children were born, eight of whom died in infancy. One daughter, (Veronica) Mrs. Richard L. Bauemer of Richmond, Indiana, died April 16, 1929. Her husband also preceded her death on July 26, 1917 and since his passing she made her home with her son Joseph until her death.

She leaves to mourn two sons, John and Joseph of Bishop, and one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Josephine) Hardiek of Dieterich. Two half-sisters, Mrs. Henry Beckman of Bishop, and Mrs. John Doedtman of Teutopolis; three half-brothers, Tony, Ben and Joseph Esker of Teutopolis also survive; besides 18 grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday morning, Jan. 3, 1943 at 10:00 from St Aloys Catholic Church. The pastor, Fr. Anthony Wagner, O. P. M., sang the Requiem High Mass and also officiated at the burial, which took place in the parish Cemetery.

Pall-bearers were grandsons of the deceased. They were: Corp. Robert Mette, Lawrence Mette, Herman Mette, Leonard Mette, George Mette, and Clarence Hardiek.

Mrs. Mette was a member of the Married Ladies Sodality. The members of the sodality attended the funeral in a body.

These from a distance who attended the funeral were: Richard L. Bauemer and daughter, Joan, of Anderson, Indiana; Corp. Robert J. Mette of Camp Forrest, Tenn.; Miss Marie Mette, student nurse at St. John Hospital, Springfield; and others whose names we may have failed to get.
