Elizabeth Olson

Elizabeth, the 12th and youngest child of Anders and Christine Westad was born in a sod house in Albert Township, Benson County, North Dakota. She attended country school and graduated from the high School in Maddock. After graduation, she attended summer school at what was then Valley City Normal College. That fall, she began several years of teaching in Harlow, a small community near the Westad farm. She married her high school sweetheart Lloyd F. Olson, 27 October 1920 in Minnewaukan, ND. She worked as a cook for Steig & Olson Roadbuilders for several years. Lloyd's father Ole J. Olson was a co-owner in this company that built some of the first roads in west and west central North Dakota. Lloyd and Elizabeth farmed at Velva, ND. They adopted two boys during that time. During WWII, the family moved to Richmond, CA for a year where Lloyd worked in the shipyards. The family moved back to Velva for several months, then back to Esmond where they were engaged in farming until 1962. Lloyd and Elizabeth moved into Maddock and spent some of their happiest years in retirement. Elizabeth was a gentle, unselfish spirit. She took care of her husband, her two boys, was active in her church, and loved visiting family members in the community. She was much loved and is dearly missed.
