The source of Elizabeth's maiden name of ?Tuthill is Torrey's New England marriages. However an early 20th century Tuthill researcher (Lucy D. Ackerly) could find no English Tuthill family where she could fit, and the early 20th century Paine researcher (Nathaniel Emmons Paine) believed she could be related to the Henry Bloomfield (of England) named as "kinsman" in Thomas Payne's will ... but with no further information.

Please continue discussion of Elizabeth's ancestry here:

The Geni tree shows her as "parents unknown" but reflecting the commonly seen maiden name.

Note: According to Lucy D. Ackerly, "The Corey Family of Southampton & Southold, Long Island, NY", (Genealogies of Long Island Families, Vol. 1), "CD-ROM," pg. 310, the inventories of both Peter Paine and his mother, Elizabeth, were dated at Southold, Long Island 15 Sept. 1658. She died 1657, per Horace M. Paine, M.D., "Southold Branch of The Paine Family", (in Paine Family Records, H.D. Paine, 1880-1883), pg. 12 and per Torrey, pg. 552.

"Henry Bloomfield may have been a brother to his wife Elizabeth or Bloomfield's wife may have been his sister. A search of the parishes in Colchester may give additional light on this point."

Elizabeth Bloomfield

  • Born: Abt 1584, Wrentham, Suffolk, England
  • Married 22 Nov 1610, England, to Thomas Paine
  • Died: 2 May 1620, Southold, Suffolk, NY (???)

Settled in Yarmouth in 1639.

From "Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy #70 Paine or Payne of Truro, by Shebnah Rich and #32 Early Settlers of Eastham by Joshua Paine of Harwich": "Thomas-1 Paine b. 11 Dec 1588 England; d.1640 [Virkus 7:1586-1650] (Son of Thomas Payne (ca. 1540-1631) & Katherine (Harssant) Payne), of Cooklie, co. Suffolk, England.) [Virkus 7]:m. 22 Nov 1610 Elizabeth ?.

He was a weaver from Wrentown, co. Suffolk, England. He came over in his own ship, the "Mary Ann", 1637, and settled at Salem, Mass.

From "The Planters of the Commonwealth" by Charles Edward Banks, 1930: The "Mary Anne" of Yarmouth, William Goose, master, sailing from Ipswich, Eng. in May and arriving at Boston June 20, 1637. Thomas Paine 50 weaver of Wrentham, co. Suffolk to Salem Mrs. Elizabeth Paine 53 Thomas Paine Jr. John Paine Mary Paine Elizabeth Paine Dorothy Paine Sarah Paine Margaret Neave 58 widow, of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, to Salem Rachel Dixon

Apparently another immigrant: [Virkus 7] Thomas Paine (1586-1650) from England, with his son Thomas, to Plymouth, Mass., 1621; settled at Yarmouth; freeman 1639; 1st dep. to Gen. Ct. Married Margaret, dau. of Sir Thomas Pultney.

However, this second thomas is questionable. First of all, the only known ship to arrive in 1621 was the Fortune with its 35 passengers (number from writings of Bradford and Winslow), and the passenger list did not include either Thomas Paine.

Credible traditionary accounts that were committed to writing early in several branches of the family state that his son Thomas immigrated at about age 10 with his father Thomas.

There was more than one Thomas Payne (or Paine) in New England and genealogists often confuse them. The constable of Eastham in 1653 was a Thomas Paine who married Mary Snow, of Mayflower pedigree. His will is dated 12 MAY 1705 and is therefore unlikely to have been related to the Thomas Payne who came over on the Mary Anne of Yarmouth in 1637, who was aged 50, and had a son named Thomas who was about 10 years old. The Eastham Thomas Paine usually is thought to be the son of Thomas Paine and Margaret Pultney. Unfortunately, some genealogists have thought that Thomas Payne, who married Elizabeth Bloomfield, must have been the same as the Eastham Thomas Paine, so that some records erroneously show both Pultney and Bloomfield as wives of one Thomas Payne. It may be that this error is also motivated by the zealous attempt to link a family to a Mayflower passenger.
