Origins
John Simmons left a will in Johnston County, Province of North Carolina dated 17 January 1770. His will was probated May of 1770. He left his estate to wife Dinah and his 5 youngest children (Willis, William, Solomon, Elizabeth, and Mary). In the County Court Minutes of Johnston Co., NC 1770, Deannah SIMMONS is named as Executrix, qualified page 113, witnessed Jesse Minton and Adam Simmons. His wife Dianah qualified as Executrix, but apparently there were problems in settling the estate, probably in dividing the land and possibly because most of the children were not of age. In August 1772, two prominent local outsiders were appointed to adjust and settle the estate.
