Biography

Birth

Elizabeth King was born about 1635 to Thomas King Jr. and Anne Collins, both Puritan Great Migration emigrants from England. Some online trees and unsourced indexes give Elizabeth's birth and/or baptism as 1635 (various locations), but as yet no supporting primary or secondary records have been found.

Marriage

Elizabeth King married Samuel Rice on 8 November 1655 at Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and they had seven children. [1][2]

Death & Legacy

Elizabeth was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Marlborough, 30 October 1667, having passed away about two weeks after the birth of her son Samuel Rice King.[3] Ward states that she died at Sudbury; his source for this is unclear. [4]

After Elizabeth's death, her husband gave their newborn son Samuel Rice King to Elizabeth's brother Peter King and his wife Sarah Rice to raise as their own. Peter and his wife Sarah did not have any children, making the adopted Samuel Peter's heir. In Sudbury records, Samuel is usually referred to as "Samuel King, alias Rice", and even his children bore the surname "King, alias Rice". By the third generation, the "alias Rice" was dropped and their surname was listed as "King".

Research Notes

For those descended from Elizabeth's grandson Ezra King, by her son Samuel Rice King, note that Ezra King and his wife Silence Rice were double 2nd cousins, as their grandparents were composed of two Rice brothers (sons of Deacon Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost) marrying two King sisters (daughters of Thomas King Jr. and Anne Collins). That is to say that this Elizabeth's sister Mary King was married to Elizabeth's husband's brother Thomas Rice and their granddaughter Silence married Elizabeth's grandson Ezra. Descendants of this line can still share a fairly high amount of DNA with their distant cousins.
