Around 1705 Quakers in VA were grudgingly tolerated.By 1712 is was estimated that at least 5,000 Quakers lived in the colony of VA.During the 1700s their numbers increased to well over 10,000.About the time of the Revolution the Quakers began to move out of Virginia and into Western Carolina and across the Blue Ridge mountains.Soon there were very few Quakers left in eastern Virginia.A branch of the family, Edward Rowell and his wife Elizabeth Cooper were Quakers.Their left their Surry Co VA home aobut 1770 to join their Quaker friends and relatives farther south

Origins

Margaret Phillips first married John Cooper and they had a daughter named Elizabeth.Estate of John Cooper:Surry County VA book 2, page 132, mentions Margaret Hodge the relict of John Cooper dec'd who married John Hodge.Further, "Surry Co VA Records 1652-1684" by Davis:18 Jan 1677 John Hodge who married Margaret the relict of John Cooper, dec'd ...... Elizabeth, the only child of the dec'd......

After John Hodge died, Margaret Phillips married Augustine Hunnicutt Jr.Will of Augustine Hunnicutt:Surry County VA book 6, page 6:"....wife Margaret, son Augustine, daughters Katherine, Ann...." Further clarity is added by Margaret Phillips Hunnicutt's will:Surry County VA book 7, page 132:"....daughter Elizabeth [this would be John Cooper's daughter by Margaret Phillips] wife of Edward Rowell and her son Richard Rowell .... daughter Mary [this would be John Hodge's daughter by Margaret Phillips] wife of Bray Hargrave ..... to Margaret Hargrave ..... to daughter Katherine [this would be one of Augustine Hunnicutt's daughters]
