Marriage Bond

"Know all men by these presents that we, John Hardy & Michael See, are held and firmly bound unto the the (sic) Commonwealth of Virginia in fifty pounds current money to be paid to said Commonwealth to the which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executorsr and administrators, joint(l)y and severaly, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seal and dated this 8th day of Septr 1780.

The condition of the above obligation is such that If there be no lawfull cause to obstruct a mariage Intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Michael See and Elizabeth Shell, then the above obligation to void or else to remain in ful force and virtue.

They lived near Witchers Creek. One of their slaves, Jonathan, was carried away by indians and later made a Chief. He was the son of Dick Pointer, the slave who held off the indians at Donnelly's Fort while the other person went to get a gun. He was freed for his bravery.

On the day she gave birth to their last child, William See, her husband Michael was killed by Shawnee Indians. Elizabeth and her brother Leonard Morris were appointed adminstrators of his estate. [3]

Betty married thirdly about 1793 to John VanBever or VanBibber.

She died about 1800 in Mason County, Virginia, USA.
