Mrs. Newton Shadle Funeral Held Sunday

Death Of Chester Township Woman Is Distinct Loss To Community

Funeral services for Mrs. Newton Shadle, who died of acute indigestion at her home in Chester township Friday, were held at 11 o'clock Sunday at the home. Burial was made in the Gruver[sic-Snow] cemetery south of the Shadle home. Rev. Bruce Mounsey was in charge of the service.

Mrs. Shadle, who was born March 29, 1849, the daughter of Jacob and Mariah Penrod, was a fine Christian character and her entire life was devoted to that which makes for the betterment of mankind. Her passing brings profound sorrow to a wealth of friends and relatives. She had suffered form paralysis for two or three years and had endured this physical handicap with remarkable fortitude.

She was a life-long resident of Chester township, where her birth took place about 1874[sic-see note below]. Three children survive, as follows: Oscar Shadle, Mrs. John Osborn, both of Chester township, and Mrs. Lester Clark, of Liberty township. One brother surviving is Calvin Penrod, of Chester township.

Concerning the sentence "She was a life-long resident of Chester township, where her birth took place about 1874." I think this date should be in reference to her marriage date as: The Biographical Sketch of James N. Shadle, from Standard History of Adams and Wells County, Indiana shows that James N. Shadle married Miss Caroline Penrod in 1875. The H. Brown & Son web site shows the J. Newton Shadle married Caroline Penrod 12 Feb 1875, and J. Newton Shadle's obituary of Monday, July 31, 1933 in Bluffton, Indiana Evening News Banner, shows he married Miss Caroline Penrod on Feb. 12, 1875.
