The Inquirer and Commercial News (Perth WA) Fri 9 Dec 1898
DEATH OF MRS. E. SOLOMON.
Yesterday morning, the news reached Fremantle that the wife of Mr. E. Solomon, M.L.A., ex-Mayor of Fremantle, had died on Saturday last on board the German mail steamer Bremen, while that vessel was making the passage across the Great Australian Bight to Adelaide.
For several weeks previously to her departure from Fremantle, Mrs. Solomon's condition had been of a very serious nature, and her husband finally decided to take her to South Australia for medical advice. No fear, however, was at that time entertained as to the likelihood of her not being strong enough to stand the voyage.
Consequently her friends and relatives in Fremantle were shocked when they heard that Mr. E. B. Solomon, step-son of the departed lady, had received a telegram from Adelaide to the effect that Mrs. Solomon had died on Saturday, and that she had been buried at sea on Sunday.
The deceased lady was not quite 31 years old, and was a native of Fremantle, her maiden name having been Elizabeth Stokes [Stubbs]. She was the mother of two girls and three boys, all of whom survive her, the youngest child being only 18 months old.
Throughout yesterday, the flag at the Fremantle Town-hall was at half-mast, out of re- spect for the memory of the ex-mayoress.
The Mayor, Mr. J. McHenry Clark, despatched a telegram, of condolence yesterday on behalf of himself and the Councillors to Mr. Solomon, who has decided to continue the voyage to Melbourne in the steamer Bremen. At the meeting of the Fremantle Municipal Council last night the Mayor (Mr. J. McHenry Clark) alluded to the death of Mrs. Solomon. He would call upon Cr. John, as senior councillor, to propose that a message of condolence be sent to their late mayor.
Cr. John proposed — "That a letter of condolence be written to Mr. Solomon in his great bereavement." The news was all the more sad because it was generally believed that Mr. Solomon had gone to the eastern states in the expectation that his wife would recover from her serious illness. They had heard that morning of her sad death, and it would be a graceful act on the part of the council to send a letter of sympathy to Mr. Solomon in his sudden and sad bereavement.
Cr. Newbold, in seconding the resolution, said that it would meet with the unanimous approval of the council and the townspeople generally. He would also ask that the message should be recorded in the minutes. The resolution was carried unanimously.
