About Elizabeth Cromwell

Elizabeth, who was married to Robert Cromwell, was the daughter of Sir Thomas and Elizabeth Stuart of the Isle of Ely, Knight, descended from the Royal Family of Stuart in Scotland. Sir Robert died at Huntingdon, June, 1617 ; his wife Elizabeth, survived the elevation of her son to the Protectorate, and died Nov. 17, 1654, at a very advanced age; Foster, in his " Statesmen of the Commonwealth of England," has paid a beautiful tribute to her memory and worth. This distinguished lady of the British Isle, was the mother of Henrietta Cromwell, who was first married to Roger Whetstone, Esq. an officer in the parliamentary army, and afterwards to Col. John Jones, in 1623; the maternal grandparent of Hon. William Jones, who married Hannah, youngest daughter of Governor Eaton of New Haven ; and was also the great grandparent of Sir William Jones of India, and Rev. William Jones of Nayland, so eminent in the annals of literature and science.

Elizabeth Steward was the daughter of William Steward. William's father Nicholas Steward in the early days of the Reformation had secured from his own brother Robert Steward, who was the last prior of Ely and first Dean of Ely, long leases of abbey (later dean and chapter) lands. Those leases passed to Elizabeth's childless brother Thomas, and eventually to her son Oliver.

The family was convinced that they descended from the Stewart royal house, via Sir John Steward, the so-called Scotangle, who moved to England in the service of Henry V. In 1511 the heralds prepared a full, if questionable, genealogy for them, and this became a document of obsessive importance for the family. Their surname is often spelled as a variation of the Scottish surname Stewart/Stuart/Steuart.

She was baptized at Holy Trinity, Ely, 28th Oct. 1565. She married there 10 Feb. 1588-9, William Lynne, gent., who was buried there 26 Jul following, and their only child, Catherine, was also buried there 17 Mar 1589/90. She married secondly about a year after her first husband's death, Robert Cromwell of Huntingdon, Esq., by whom she was the mother of Oliver Cromwell, and who was buried at All Saints, Huntingdon, 24 Jun 1617. She died 18 Nov. 1654, and was buried in great state, contrary to her express wishes.

In 1661, King Charles II ordered several bodies to be exhumed at Henry VII and other Chapels, to be buried outside the gates. These remains included Elizabeth Cromwell.
