  • Matthew1 Whipple (MatthewA) was born about 1590 in Bocking, Essex County, England and died 28 September 1647 in Ipswich, Essex County, Mass. He married twice. (1) Anne Hawkins in Bocking 7 May 1622. She is the daughter of John Hawkins and Mary Levitt. (2) Rose Chute, widow of Lionel Chute, in Ipswich on 13 November 1646. She is the daughter of Robert Baker or Barker. A clothier, Matthew migrated to New England in 1638. He ws a farmer in the new world.
  • Matthew Whipple and Anne Hawkins had the following children, all but Joseph born in Bocking:
    • i. Matthew, about 1623 and buried 27 October 1623.
    • ii. Matthew, about 1624 and buried 3 April 1627.
    • iii. Mary, about 1626. She was living in 1645.
    • + iv. Anne, about 1628 and married (1) John Annable, (2) Nicholas Clapp.
    • + v. Elizabeth, about 1629 and married Jacob Perkins.
    • + vi. John (Lieutenant), born 6 September 1632; died 22 November 1695. Married (1) Sarah Kent, (2) Elizabeth Woodman, (3) Mary Stevens.
    • + vii. Matthew, born ca 1635, died 20 October 1658; married Mary Bartholomew.
    • + viii. Joseph, born ca 1640; died between 20 November 1708 and 7 May 1709; married (1) Sarah (___ ), (2) Sarah ( ___ ).

  • 3. JOHN WHIPPLE (Matthew-2, Matthew-1), known as Lieutenant John, was born September 6, 1632, in Ipswich, Massachusetts; married 1st, SARAH KENT who died June 14, 1658; married 2nd, ELIZABETH WOODMAN, May 5, 1659; married 3rd, MARY STEVENS, July 21, 1663.

    • Sarah, called eldest daughter in will; date of birth is not given in Ipswich records, so the identity of her mother is not certain. Because of identicalness of names one might assume that she was Sarah's daughter.

Administration was granted to his only son John August 23, 1722. An agreement of settlement of the estate was made April 3, 1723, between John Whipple, junior, and Joanna Whipple, his mother-in-law.

  • 2. Whipple Genweb shows a daughter Hannah in this family because a Hannah is named in her father's will. However, there is no birth record, and very little time between Elizabeth's birth Dec 1661 and John's next marriage 19 months later in Jul 1663 for squeezing in another child. Hannah is not listed as a child by Source:Holman, Mary Lovering. Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife, Frances Helen Miller. The notes, on the above website, point out that at the time of John's will, his son John was married to Hannah Rolfe, so the question is asked if this is the Hannah Whipple referred to?
