About Elizabeth Whitney

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~fesschequy/genealogy/Whitney.html

JOHN WHITNEY, son of Henry Whitney, born circa 1645, probably in England, possibly in America but likely before his father Henry first appeared in America in 1649; died in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, in 1720, prior to 11 Oct. 1720 when his son-in-law Joseph Keeler was appointed administrator of his estate. Like his father before him, John was a millwright and miller. On 12 March 1674/5 in Norwalk, Connecticut,

John married ELIZABETH SMITH, died some time after 3 April 1741 in Connecticut, daughter of Richard Smith. John and Elizabeth had 10 children.

This is not the same Richard Smith who married Bathesheba Rogers. There is a christening record for their daughters Elizabeth and Anne (twins).

John and Elizabeth had six sons and four daughters:

  1. -- JOHN WHITNEY JR., born 12 March 1676/7 in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 3 Feb. 1713 in Norwalk, married Elizabeth Finch.
  2. 3. JOSEPH WHITNEY, born 1 March 1679 in Norwalk, Connecticut.
  3. -- HENRY WHITNEY, born 21 Feb. 1681 in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 26 April 1728 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, married Elizabeth Olmstead, daughter of Mary (Benedict) Olmstead.
  4. -- ELIZABETH WHITNEY, born circa 1684 in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 17 March 1763 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, married Joseph Keeler.
  5. -- RICHARD WHITNEY, born 18 April 1687 in Norwalk, Connecticut, married Hannah Darling.
  6. -- ANNE WHITNEY, born 1691 in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 9 May 1773 in Sharon, Connecticut, married Matthew St. John.
  7. -- ELEANOR WHITNEY, born 27 Jan. 1693 in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 25 Jan. 1777 in Norwalk, Connecticut, married Jonathan Fairchild.
  8. -- NATHAN WHITNEY, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, married Sarah (NN).
  9. -- SARAH WHITNEY, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, died 22 Oct. 1720 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, married Samuel Smith.
  10. -- JOSIAH WHITNEY, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, died as early as 1750 in Norwalk, married Eunice Hanford.

Disputed Origins

This Elizabeth Smith is being mixed up with several different unrelated families from all different locations. There was a Richard Smith from Wethersfield, not related to the Richard Smith who spent some time at Long Island but returned to Rhode Island and they are both different than the Richard Smith of Smithtown and none of them are related. Previous submitter wrote the following so this is a response. The Richard Smith of Smithtown, L.I. married Sarah Hammond as per The Great Migration and a NYGBR article that refutes the old Sarah Folger error. NO such person as Sarah Folger for that family. This Elizabeth Smith is no relation to the Smithtown, NY family or to the Rhode Island family and neither of these "mothers" attached were married to the Richard Smith of Wethersfield. There appears to be a different Richard Smith of Norwalk so that is where to go for this Elizabeth Smith. Be cautious because there were a lot of different Elizabeth Smiths of CT who have already been separated, but cannot certify that they still are. In this era, the best way to keep everyone separate is to read the scholarly works on them and notice the different locations.

I am come to find the Elizabeth Smith born in 1655 married to John Whitney does not have enough clear evidence or sourcing to show who her parents were as the ones attached here are clearly not correct. Some think Richard Smith and Sarah Fogler were her parents that were married in 1648. There is not evidence I have found for her parents. If anyone else has sourcing please let us know. This line above her should be detached from Richard Smith and Bethseba Rogers as obviously the correct Elizabeth Smith is attached according to their marriage.
