Howard Hughes was married twice, both ended in divorce. In 1925, he married Ella, daughter of David Rice who was the nephew of Houston Mayor Horace Baldwin Rice and William Marsh Rice, who endowed Rice University (in Houston) where Howard Hughes had briefly studied before dropping out after the death of his father's.
Ella's mother, Martha Lawson Botts, was the daughter of Colonel Walter Browne Botts and Martha McIlhenny.
Botts married Martha Elizabeth McIlhenny on September 8, 1860. He fought in Confederate Company A of the 5th Texas Infantry along with his brother, Charles. He resign in July of 1862 after a head wound suffered at the battle of Seven Pines. Walter co-founded the Grey & Botts law firm in Houston with his cousin, Peter Grey, which today is the global law firm Baker & Botts. He was a Mason, becoming the Worshipful Master in 1865, he also belonged to the Scottish Rite.
Howard and Ella divorced four years later in 1929.
In 1957, he married the beautiful but down-to-earth Hollywood actress Jean Peters, eventually divorcing in 1971.
Both wives received alimony and $78 million each in his will, which was finally settled in 2010. Ella died in 1992 and Jean died in 2000, thus neither wife received their Hughes inheritance.
He died without children.
