About Ella Mae Simpkins
Ella Mae Simpkins October 11, 1940 - November 28, 2014
D/O Robert Earl and Flotilla "Flo" Ann Little Simpkins
Beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Dearly loved. Someone so loved and special, can never be forgotten.
Ella Mae Simpkins passed away on November 28, 2014, at Hospice of Dayton, OH., after a 3 & 1/2 year battle with cancer. Ella was born October 11, 1940, on a small farm on the Clear Creek Road, in rural Salt Lick, Kentucky. Daughter of the late Robert Earl and Flotilla "Flo" Ann Little Simpkins. She attended Salt Lick Elementary School, and graduated from Bath County High and Lexington Business Collage. Ella served in the US Army and retired from General Motors.
On November 8, 2014, Ella was one of five women among the 95 Veterans on the Honor Flight from Dayton, Ohio to Washington DC. Ella served during the Berlin Crisis and Bay of Pigs. Serving at the US Army' primary Signal Relay Center in Pirmasens, Germany. Ella had a special clearance in communications. Ella' duties contributed to the exemplary heritage of women in military services. Ella looked forward to and enjoyed that honor flight, she passed away 20 days after the flight.
Ella was a kind, loving person who had compassion for everyone. All her life Ella helped others, whether it was to give a homeless person her hat and gloves, or a blanket on a cold winter day/night, buying food for a family, paying someone' rent, or taking a person to and from doctors appointments. Maybe just mowing a yard during the summer months to help someone who was ill or an elderly person. Ella was still helping and thinking of others until the very end. Many, many times Ella would do without something she needed to help another person or a member of her family. Ella's kind loving sprit touched the life's of everyone who knew her.
She was everyone' favorite sister, aunt, gr aunt and the rock of her family. This incredible woman has been an inspiration to our family and to everyone she meets. She has always been my hero as she was truly an Angel on earth.
Ella is survived by two sister and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Per Ella' wishes' she was cremated. Ella purchased a small urn for each of her sibling, nieces and nephew, she wanted a part of her to always be with her family. Her family that she loved so much, a family that returned that love for Ella.
A memorial stone for Ella will be set by her parent's stone in the Dickerson Cemetery in honor of this wonderful person and her life.
